Incredibly happy I got my coffee fix over this very short spring break! …yum!

Wednesday already?

Hello, all. Long time, no blog. I have been unbelievably busy since the last time I posted. I’ve decided to take a break from homework and studying to do a tumblr update.

This past weekend was a fantastic weekend. A couple friends from home came up to visit me. We spent most of the day Saturday in Chicago. There, I experienced my first time at the Sears Tower, 103 stories up in the air looking down on the city of Chicago. It was night by the time we got up there and it was the most beautiful scene I’ve seen in my life (maybe). I couldn’t believe it. Overall, the time spent with my friends was awesome.

Of course, I did not get any homework complete over the weekend so I knew I was in store for a busy week. Busy indeed. I can’t believe it’s Wednesday already. All I’ve done the past three days is basically homework and studying. Today I met with the television center to discuss time I am able to do weather. Fortunately, I will be doing weather. Unfortunately (totally my decision), I may have to miss all or just a little bit of my Calculus 3 class every so often. As of now, it looks like I will be doing weather every other Monday or Wednesday. I’ll find out Monday.

I am currently working on a Meteorology lab. It is seriously the longest MET lab I’ve done (which I suppose makes sense since it is a higher level course). I currently have to do “isopleths” which is basically what a computer can do these days. It is kind of interesting, though, from a weather nerd’s perspective. I actually get to see and analyze what is going on and what I think could happen. I have to plot dew points, temperature, and pressure. Needless to say it is a big mess. A “good” big mess. It’s supposed to be that way.

Tomorrow promises to be yet another busy day. At least I can sleep in since class doesn’t start until 11AM! After that I have Calculus homework to review along with class and then I have another meeting to go to for the American Meteorological Society (NIU Chapter). Come to find out, once I complete my degree, I will automatically be a part of the national chapter of the American Meteorological Society. I believe you have to take the test if your degree does not satisfy the requirements for AMS. Fortunately, mine does. I guess there is good coming out of taking all these physics and math courses!

Have a fantastic rest of the week. We’re over the hump!

News, news, news, math

So much for a “daily” blog. Looks like this is going to be a “when Kyle has time” blog. Yesterday was pretty much devoted to school work. I did take a break to go to the gym then headed to the library for a few hours. After the few hours, I decided to not study anymore. I basically took a phone call, talked to some friends and headed to bed around 12:30 (somewhat earlier than usual).

It was fantastic to, once again, sleep in on a Thursday. I feel so much better getting eight hours of sleep!

As far as the title is concerned; this is basically my life in for the next 25 hours. I have two quizzes tomorrow: Journalism and Calc. The journalism quiz is over the last 36 hours of news. So, I have to read the Northern Star newspaper, watch CNN and read online news stories. I should also watch/read some highlights from the State of the Union from Tuesday. I go see my math tutor for the first time this semester. I basically have the concepts down but he always has an easier way of explaining things. He says I am one of the few that comes in and DOESN’T expect him to do the homework for me. I have never understood the point of that. In the end, it’s going to hurt you. When you have to do these problems on a test by yourself, it shows you’ve learned nothing.

Tomorrow two of my friends come up for the weekend and I cannot wait! It’s been really hard to concentrate this week knowing they are coming.

Back to the news!

Slacking (or so it seems)

Happy Tuesday!

This will be my last happy Tuesday for a while, as “real” physics lab starts up next week. We have weekly quizzes over the lab manual. They are worth 10 points; one point for showing up and three points each for three questions. The lab teaching assistant seems pretty chill compared to some of the horror stories I’ve heard about the class. I am not worrying too much because one of the guys in my group took the course last semester and knows what to expect (that could also be a bad thing since he is in it AGAIN).

Once again in my Meteorology class, there was no lecture. We talked about the AFD (Area Forecast Discussion) for the DeKalb/Sycamore area, again. For 50 minutes we talked about how today was going to be cloudy with broken sunshine and warmer temperatures. This professor is awesome, though. We are supposed to be in there from 11:00 to 12:15. He says he is cutting it down to just 50 minutes and we get out at 11:50. No complaining one bit.

The other classes are BLAH. Lots of busy work. Busy work that I feel like I should be doing. I have done absolutely NO homework tonight (not that I have much). I feel like I should have at least worked ahead in something. Oh well. I finished my two physics assignments that are due Monday. Tomorrow, however, is going to be a different story. I have a story for my journalism course due on Monday that has to be 750-900 words long. Shouldn’t be a huge deal since I don’t need any sources (minus the website, I suppose). So, tomorrow night after my work out, I will likely go get a coffee from Starbucks and head to the library for the night. The good thing about being out late is that I don’t have class until 11AM on Thursday!

Well, I am currently nerding out and listening to news music. Don’t judge and more importantly, do not get too jealous ;).

Goodbye, for now.

Blah day...

Today was another one of those “blah” days. The weather was crummy; freezing drizzle, blowing snow, chilly, foggy. Not a great day. I woke up, had my usual cups of coffee then took a trip to Dunkin’ Donuts for some coffee and breakfast. Good stuff.

Every Sunday since the fourth or fifth week of last semester has been devoted to homework (minus Christmas break, obviously). I’ve decided that worked well for me so I am doing it again this semester. My plan is to have Friday and Saturday be my relaxing days and then just hate life Sunday (not totally, I love life!). So, today’s work started around noon and ended about 5:30 PM. I completed my Physics assignments that are due NEXT Monday as well as this week’s readings for the class. Completed (almost) my lab that’s due Thursday for my MET class and then ended by reading for my journalism class.

Afterwards I watched Friends. This seems to be a common denominator. I love this show.

Have a great week, all!

In the back of my head, I’ve wondered this. HA!

In the back of my head, I’ve wondered this. HA!

Short and Sweet

Saturday was not a very eventful day. At all. I woke up around noon, ate some oatmeal, and just vegged out for a few hours. I did do a load of laundry, which was much needed. I could barely fit all of my laundry in one machine. I still have no received the package my parents sent out last Wednesday, so I still only have four pair of <del>sucks </del>socks.

Later in the day, I made a trip to Walmart to get a few things. I generally don’t come out of that place without spending 30 or 40 bucks. I walked out only having spent $20.00! I was proud of myself. This never happens. I even used a coupon, which I normally don’t do but I definitely should especially not having a steady income. Speaking of which, I really need to look for an extremely part-time job.

As I’ve mentioned before, it seems I have been a pig this week (aside from the fact that everything in the food court has gone up in price). So, I decided to use some of my Subway gift card and bought Subway for dinner. It was delicious, as always. Along with Subway I watched the news and then eventually I watched Friends, for a long time. Probably the remainder of the night. I got a LITTLE homework done during the day yesterday but overall it was a very lazy day.

<del>Today </del>Everyday this week: Homework, homework, homework.

TGIF (one day late)

I’ve discovered that I really am not a fan of getting out of class at 4PM on a Friday.

The day started out at 7:45 with no snow. I was a little upset, but I was thinking the snow wasn’t going to start around 9AM anyway. In actuality, it didn’t start until 9:45, so I was close.

The first two classes went by fast, as usual (even though it was only the second meeting). After class, I grabbed some lunch and checked the weather. By this time the snow had begun to fall! In between lunch and checking the weather, and my nap, I read the first two sections of my Calculus because of a stupid quiz. The quiz was two questions. I REALLY need to brush up on my trig skills using the Unit Circle.

Class ends, and it was really snowing out. I enjoyed the walk home aside from the soaking wet feet. I grabbed some dinner (early dinner, I suppose) and a few people came into my room and we just had some casual conversation. Instead of going to the gym, I decided I was going to do stares. A few other people decided they wanted to as well. It was REALLY hard. I got up to the fifth floor (out of 14, including the basement) and I felt like I was going to fall over. Two of us ended up going up and down 4 times, and then instead of taking the elevator back to the fifth floor we took the stairs. It was a great workout.

A friend who lived on the floor last year took an amazing opportunity to participate in a co-op program. Yesterday was her birthday, so as a floor we decided to skype her and sing happy birthday to her. It was nice to see her.

After that, things got interesting, as a whole floor. It was an enjoyable time. I finally called it a night around 2 or 2:30.

I’m going to try and do a little homework today. Not sure yet.

Anxiously (A)waiting...

…to see what this weather does. All day the the models and the National Weather Service have been going back and fourth between amounts of snow/duration of snow for Friday. In my Meteorology class, we were supposed to start our first lecture. This is an hour and 15 minute class. Not that I am complaining, but we did not start the lecture. We spent the whole time talking about the impending snow storm set to hit the area Friday morning. We read a forecast discussion that said the area could experience sleet, which cut back on the snow totals a couple inches. That looks like it might go a little south, so that’s good news (or bad if you hate snow). Then, it looked like the storm track was going to go a bit north, only leaving DeKalb with four to six inches of the white stuff. Now, indications show we could be back in the six to eight inch range. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens. It is driving me crazy though.

I am also anxiously awaiting my Calculus quiz tomorrow. He drops the lowest two, so if I screw up it’ll be no big deal. However, it scares me because I think I figured it out on my own without my tutor. We’ll see. I’ll do some last minute studying tomorrow (usually I do better under pressure, especially when it comes to math).

You don’t need a meteorologist (or one in training) to tell you it was cold outside today. Absolutely brutal. The walk home from the gym was rough. I probably burned more calories shivering on the way home than I did during my workout. Expect the cold to only last a couple more days. Looks like we could be back in the 40’s next week with a chance of rain (mixed with snow at times).

Lunchtime arrived and I got a sub sandwich from “Dog Pound Deli” and it was absolutely delicious along with a bag of chips. When I received my receipt, I noticed that I only have about $11.00 to last me through Sunday. Woops. I must have been a pig the last three to four days. My bad. So, it was Ramen, Tostitos and water for dinner.

After dinner I did some reading for my classes; no homework as of yet. Just lots of reading. I think this Sunday I’ll be stuck at the library for most of the day doing school work. Oh joy.

Until next time, under a blanket of snow. Adios.

Run it off

We’re half way through the week!

I am going to keep this short as I have now accumulated a little reading for school. Speaking of accumulating, we’ve got ourselves a snowstorm coming for northern Illinois! Looking like a solid 5 or 6 inches for the DeKalb area. QC folks should get 2 to 4 inches. Looking forward to it, mostly because I don’t have to drive :). Just kidding, mostly because I love snow. The no driving thing is just a plus.

Today was the first day of the dreaded Physics class. Thankfully the class is lead by the department chair, at least I think that is something to be thankful for. She seems to be very helpful and willing to answer any question that needs to be answered. However, I had to buy this stupid online homework in order to do the homework for Physics. Ugh. It’s costing me $20.00 for 10% of my grade.

Journalism went great. The syllabus seems endless and he talked the whole 50 minutes. He is kind of boring, but the class itself is very interesting. I am still considering a double major, as I would only have to take a few more journalism courses after my minor to get the major. We’ll see what happens.

My Calculus professor is a fruitcake. He has a very different personality and sense of humor. But, he seems to know what he is talking about. I am going to have to do some major reviewing tomorrow because what he said today made no sense.

I took a nap, just hours after saying I wasn’t going to take naps this semester. Ah well. Naps are good. Did a little bit of reading then a bunch of us went to the Recreation Center and ran around the track. Now, I feel great and I am ready to get some work done.

Happy snow and cold!

Routine

First day of classes means a new routine. I have an odd schedule. Nearly every day is different. I discovered Thursdays are going to be my favorites. Only two classes and the first one does not start until 11AM! Tuesdays will be my worst. Start at 8AM end at 5:50PM (not straight through, a couple hours of a break). I’ll survive. My 8AM on Tuesday is only 50 minutes long and lasts 10 weeks and is not worth a grade. It’s either and S or a U for satisfactory and unsatisfactory. Basically all I have to do is show up and do the work (imagine that).

Today’s got an odd feel to it. I feel like I haven’t been myself. Not sure what’s going on. Actually, I do. I kind of miss my family, for whatever reason, especially my dogs. Maybe it’s because I was looking at pictures last night. Not sure. I’ll of course get through it, but I guess it was just one of those days.

I went to the Recreation Center to get my mind of things, and that helped. As I walked back, the hood of my hoodie was frozen from the sweat. Temperatures have fallen throughout the day, and will only get colder as the week progresses before warming up again.

Tonight I’ve just watched Biggest Loser and now Friends. Had some mint oreo cookies and milk. Ah, life.

Adios.

I've got my days confused

Happy <del>Monday</del> Tuesday, people!

I think I am going to start doing these posts before I go to bed at night so I am not typing my “daily” blog in the middle of the day.

Yesterday was a good day. Everyone was pretty much back from Winter Break. It was nice to catch up with people. Yesterday was also an “artsy” day for me, I guess I could say. My roommate and I put up some lights to make our room a little more “exciting.” The idea was totally stolen from our friends down the hall, but they don’t mind (I don’t think :P). A couple friends and I went to Walmart to get some necessities so I figured I would look around for some. I figured it wasn’t TOO late after Christmas. Absolutely no Christmas lights. Not even red lights for Valentines Day. So, one of my friends suggested we go to Lowe’s. Lowe’s was completely out. I suggested Dollar Tree, not expecting “Christmas” lights but maybe a strand of cheap red lights for Valentines Day. Nope. No lights at all. So finally we headed to Party City and found a clear strand of lights.

While at Walmart, I decided I wanted to buy some chips and salsa. I came across Tostitos with a hint of lime (I’m not kidding, that’s what they say). I debated whether I was going to get them so I walked away, then I decided I wanted them. So, I go back and get them, or so I thought. I got home and I realized I bought the Jalepeno chips instead of the lime. So, I took them back and got a weird look from the clerk at the Customer Service Counter. But, returned them with no problem.

Back to the lights. My roommate and I put them up with blue painters tape. The blue tape, to me, was quite noticeable so I had the bright idea to use my white marker to color the tape. A neighbor handed us white-out (the strips, kind of like time) and that kind of work but was really tedious. Apparently we put on a funny show for some of the residents. I should have charged for entertainment..ha! We gave up, and I bought some “paint” white out.

Another “artsy” thing I did was make my own coffee cup. Well, not technically. My friend gave me a coffee cup where I can slide pictures up into and create my own design. It turned out well, except a few pictures cut off because I didn’t measure correctly. Ah well. As long as I can drink some coffee out of it!

The rest of the night involved a mandatory meeting that lasted about 10 minutes. Kind of pointless, but whatever. After the meeting a group of us got together and watched “The Blind Side.” Excellent, excellent movie. I quite enjoyed it, and that’s saying a lot as I don’t really enjoy movies. Maybe it is because it is based on a true story.

Have a great day!

Now, if you know me, which hopefully if you are reading this you do, I am not into watching movies what-so-ever. However, we watched “The Help” last night and it was really good! It almost makes me want to read the book (I think it’s a book, right?)

I ended my night watching a few episodes of “Friends.” I feel like that’s going to be how I end most of nights. Oh well, it’s a great show.

Back to the books tomorrow! I am surprisingly ready to get back in the game. Like I said before, check back in a couple weeks and I am sure things will be different.

Back to 1994

Happy Sunday, all! Usually this is a day I loathe, as it is my homework day. But, since classes have no started there is no homework (makes sense, right?). I suppose these “daily” blogs are going to start talking about the day before. Whatever.

Yesterday was another chill day. Not much happened. Helped my neighbor move who room around, and her roommate returned from break. Went out to a delicious dinner at Qdoba. I had a grilled chicken taco salad and Nestea’s Sweet Raspberry Iced Tea (my favorite). I have to add water in it because I think it is too sweet.

Returning to the dorms, we all just kinda relaxed and enjoyed each other’s company after being away from 5 weeks or so. Around 8 o’clock, I had this odd craving for peppermint ice cream. So, I went to Steak n’ Shake to get a peppermint shake. Actually, on my way to Steak n’ Shake I passed the local Dairy Queen, but they did not have their peppermint (candy cane) Blizzard. Bummer. But my Steak n’ Shake shake was delicious.

The rest of the night basically consisted of watching “Friends” (hence the back to 1994). My friend, Kate, is basically a Friends fanatic. She’s watched every episode a trillion times and can probably tell you every line. She also owns every season (minus two disks) so I have been watching those from the beginning. GREAT show. I wish I watched it when it was on the air.

Now, I am enjoying a cup of coffee and reading some weather blogs. May make a short trip to Walmart today, even though I really don’t want to. Oh well.

Have a great day!

Relaxing. Let's see how long this lasts.

Well, looks like this is turning into a blog where I talk about the previous day. Oh well. At least I am covering each day.

Yesterday was a pretty chill day. I unfortunately woke up around 9:30, had about 3 or 4 cups of coffee and was glued to the TV and computer models tracking another potential snowstorm coming in early next week. Unfortunately (or fortunately for snow haters) that seems to have not come together. Looks like we will see rain on Monday and some snow showers on Tuesday. An inch at best looks possible.

After some lunch (Ramen!!) I decided to head to the REC center to get a workout in. Excluding Christmas and New Years, I went to the gym every day over break, and I feel great. My goal this semester is to head to the gym at least five days a week, but I am shooting for six.

After the gym, a friend from home called me. She’s called me a lot lately to call about drama. Sometimes it gets old, but I am glad that she can feel comfortable coming to me to talk about her problems. If you are reading this and ever have a problem where you need to cleanse your mind and get stuff off your chest, I’m your guy. I am always more than happy to help out/listen.

After that I took a little nap before my roommate returned. We talked for a little bit and I FINALLY got all the rest of my stuff situated. I redecorated my room. My redecorate I mean add more weather calendar pictures to my wall. Typical me.

I realize I keep saying ‘After (blank)’, I need to work on that.

Dinner time rolled around and we went to Steak n’ Shake. I love that place. Cheap food, GREAT milkshakes. I had a peppermint something or another. I am still on a peppermint kick. I love it. My glove box in my car is filled with some peppermints that someone brought in to work and I took advantage of “Take how ever many you want!”

Last night was very chill. I uploaded some videos to Facebook and then just chilled the rest of the night.

This morning I am sitting the the lounge with a cup of coffee, my laptop and watching The Weather Channel. Ideal Sunday morning. If I had a donut it would be even better. HA!

Have a great day, until next time.

Snow doubt about it

So, I skipped a day. Whatever.

Thursday was quite an interesting day. Snow, snow and more snow. I am a nerd, so I woke up at around 6AM to watch snow coverage on the local news. My mom was still up and was trying to convince me to wait until today (Friday), but I wanted to get back to school.

Overall, roads were not too bad. Interstate 88 had a few patchy spots of snow and ice, but not too bad. Until I got to DeKalb. Roads were absolutely horrible in town.

Even though it was cold, I was sweating after taking my SIX loads of all my stuff up to my dorm. I didn’t realize how much stuff I packed until I unpacked it. Figures.

I spent the night playing blackjack and watched the movie “The Proposal.” HILARIOUS!

Now I am watching computer models that show the possibility of another snowstorm next week!

What a day.

Well, it’s my last day at home. Bittersweet to say the least. I enjoyed the five weeks off. Got to spend a lot of time with family and friends. I enjoyed time with my beloved dogs. I’m ready to go back to school, though.

The day started early. I woke up a little earlier than I had anticipated to get caught up on the first “snowstorm” of the season. Still looking good for a good 3 to 5 inches plus! Very exciting. Then, I met up with a couple friends for my favorite beverage, coffee (okay, one of my favorites). It was nice to have one last little hang out before I leave.

Then it was time to say good bye and go off to my last day at work. Work. Ugh. Of course, the last day was busy. That wasn’t bittersweet, it was just freaking awesome that I am gone! I seriously hate that job, but it is so easy that I just go back haha. Easy money. Now, I need to find a job up in DeKalb. Joy.

After work, I met my grandparents for and early dinner at Applebee’s, and it was delicious. We spent a good two hours talking, and then I said my good bye’s with them. I am going to miss them. It was great seeing them a few days while I was back.

Then it was back home. I was recently featured in a local newspaper article and someone random, no name on the return address, sent me the article in the mail. That was nice. Looked at the latest information on the incoming snowstorm, talked with my mom, and now I am here, continuing looking at the latest data for the snowstorm. I am a little obsessed. Oh well.

About to head off to the YMCA do get one last workout in before I leave, because I’m sexy and I know it. Just kidding. That song is horrible, and it played while I was at dinner….with my grandparents. HA! Then it’s home to do <del>some</del> all of my packing. I am just going to put everything in the car tonight so I don’t have to pack it in the snow tomorrow. Not looking forward to the drive in the snow. Hopefully people aren’t going to forget how to drive, and the interstates won’t be too bad.

That is all for today. Until tomorrow, farewell.

"Daily" Blog

Alright. I am going to TRY and post a blog every day for the next year just so I can look back and see what has changed/happened. Will I keep up with it every single day, probably not. I’ll give it a shot, though.

I’ll just start out by talking about winter break and the new year. I never realized how much I missed some of my friends back here at home, and I am going to miss them a lot. I can’t think of one day (aside from Christmas Eve/Christmas Day) where I was not with one of my friends. You really don’t realize these things until they’re “gone” from your life. One thing I was worried about going off to school was losing those close friendships I had here. I told them that I was going to try and come home every other weekend, they’d come visit at school and we’d have a great time. What I didn’t realize was the fact that I had a HUGE workload. I also had no idea I was going to make some of the best friends at college, which made me NOT want to ever go home. Luckily, it’s as if we hadn’t missed a beat when I came back, and that makes life great.

I finished my first book since high school, and it was GREAT! I am now into my second book, which I’ve owned for quite a few years and now just getting started!

I’ve also hit the gym every day. I hope to continue this once I am at school. It makes me feel good and I am seeing results. One thing I need to change: my diet. I have not ate well over break like I had intended. Lots of sweets, unfortunately haha. And lots of Mountain Dew.

I also had the opportunity to talk to children about snow at a local library. They’ve also invited me back in the spring to talk about tornadoes! Exciting stuff.

Also during winter break, I’ve been trying to work my butt off. My uncle owns a restaurant chain in the Quad Cities, so was nice enough to give me my job back (for the third time, mind you). The most I have worked in one week is 25 hours. I get sent home early almost every time I work because we are slow. I have not made as much money as I would have liked, but you know what? Life isn’t about money. Money most certainly does not make happiness. I’ve also come to the realization that I am going to have to work a few days up at school each week to at least get some sort of income, otherwise I won’t be able to afford anything! I also think this fast food job is motivation enough to complete school. I am so sick of hearing some of my co-workers moan and groan that they never have money. GO TO SCHOOL! Some of them wish they had, others just have a sour attitude about school and don’t want to go. In that case, stop complaining. And to those who want to go back, GO! Take action. It’s never too late.

Also during winter break, a somewhat dream came true. I got an internship at WQAD-TV, the television station I grew up watching and worked for part time for a year and a half. This summer I have the privledge to work with 4 of the best meteorologist (okay, maybe a little biased) in the area. I hope to learn the ropes of forecasting, and get some practice in front of the camera. I am just amazed how the pieces of my life are coming together. I am so blessed.

Also, I’ve had some time to watch some television. First off, I HATE the TODAY show. Ann Curry is awful. Al Roker is even more awful. I prefer Good Morning America these days. I’ve also got into the show “Fear Factor” once again. And, of course, Biggest Loser. I watched all of last season in one week because Tuesday’s were my hell days (which I think they are hell again this semester..joy!).

And now, the end of “winter” break. I am so ready to go back to school. I’m more than ready to see my friends. I am ready to get back into the swing of classes (check back in three weeks and see if I am saying the same thing ;) ). I am also ready to go back to NTC and hopefully do the weather on a more regular basis. That helps get me motivated to get through my school work.

Well, that’s all for this post. I think I covered everything. Until tomorrow, good day.

Physics and I will meet again. Too soon.

Dear physics,

If there’s a train coming at me, i’m not going to be calculating the velocity in which it will hit me with.
